Asbestos Testing: How to Test Indoor Air for Asbestos

You must have the right tools which include clean water, zip lock plastic bags, dish detergent, labels, and garden sprayer, spray lacquer and spray bottle. Asbestos testing requires that you stick to all the necessary safety standard requirements.

When you are preparing the materials that you will send for asbestos testing, do not break or cut anything that you may suspect to contain asbestos since this will make it dangerous for you. It’s important that bayou don’t sand or do anything that can put you at risk of inhaling asbestos. Preparing the area that you suspect may contain asbestos dust is also important. You have to be the areas with water that contains detergents in them. You can use the sprayer and by doing this, you will make it possible to penetrate any asbestos fibers that may be available .Wetting will reduce the chance of it getting airborne.

Before packing the material’s to be taken for asbestos testing, it’s important that you separate those ones which may contain harmless types of asbestos. Almost all building materials that include tiles, pipes and sidings may contain asbestos that may not be harmful unless they are broken or crushed. These asbestos can only be released when they are disturbed hence such areas of your home should rarely be repaired. When there is real need, a professional asbestos technician should be used to do the repairs.

Asbestos testing is compulsory in those items which you have no reason to deny that they contain asbestos. Asbestos testing is necessary in materials with cracks, tears and also those with water damage since they have higher chances of releasing asbestos fibers to the air. All your repairs should be preceded by asbestos professionals removing all the materials that are believed to contain asbestos.

After you have done all the above, collecting your asbestos samples should follow. Your material samples should be limited to a surface that covers a square of an inch since many laboratories that do asbestos testing do not require more than this. It’s a standard requirement that you must comply with at all times!

The samples for asbestos testing should be placed inside the plastic bag and zipped. This should be followed by the items being placed in another plastic container and completely locked. The container should be completely airtight. By using a towel, you can wipe off the dust from the surface where the samples were taken from and also seal the edges of the building materials where the samples were taken from by spraying them with lacquer.
